Math Tutoring

Halle has been tutoring for over three decades, first as a peer tutor in high school, then as an undergrad at University of Florida's math lab, little realizing that teaching math would become a career and life passion.

Since then, Halle has worked with students of all ages, including elementary, middle,  high school, and college students, as well as adults preparing for career exams and teachers seeking to deepen and expand their understanding of mathematics.

Halle believes that getting to know her students is the starting point for any teaching and learning relationship, and student knowledge, learning styles, ways of thinking, and interests should remain the guiding stars throughout.  Halle uses a variety of teaching strategies to foster curiosity and support genuine understanding and long lasting learning, including math manipulatives and visual models, reasoning routines, and math games.  Halle strives to make math meaningful, interesting, and even fun!

Approcah

I'm committed to learning about my students in order to best support them.  As I learn how they think, and what they understand, I am better able to support them to learn and grow.

Unfortunately, many people have developed a belief that they "can't do math" or they're "not a math person."  I see this as a failure of our education system.  Certainly we all have strengths and weaknesses, natural talents and propensities, but we are all humans, with human brains inside our heads.  This means we have naturally evolved to contemplate quantity and patterns, to reason with numbers, and to problem solve.
